It's Magic

To be true to the name I share my Friday ritual of playing Magic the CCG with friends at St. Charles' Fantasy Shop game store. After going about two months with and even split of 1-2 and 2-1 records I went 3-0 last night.

While I am a moderately ranked member of St. Louis' Magic community, even more than the competition I look forward to using Magic as a teaching tool. For years I have been saving cards to start a Magic club for students. I might get my first chance next fall. If you talk to Aidan you will know that this is not quite true. While trying to instill my geekdom on him, I have learned my first lesson in teaching Magic. In terms used by Magic developers, flavor before function. Teaching the function, the rules, of the game must come after he gets into the flavor, the fantasy genre, of the game. This idea hit me in the face like a stack of cards with 2 rubber bands around them when 2 fellow Cub Scouts showed up to a Scouting event with rubber banded Yu-Gi-Oh! cards. I realized that at his age showing off what you have is more fun than winning with it. To help with this I have brought him to 3 Magic events with me where he runs around the store looking at all the games while I play.

...maybe a few more years.
